The Special Investigating Unit
(SIU) is set to investigate Strategic, Technical and Operational Support
services tender corruption within the O R Tambo District Municipality.
The investigation comes after
President Ramaphosa signed Proclamation R80 of 2022 authorising the SIU to
investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration in the affairs of
the O R Tambo District Municipality, and to recover any financial losses suffered
by the State or the Municipality.
“The SIU probe into the
Municipality will focus on the procurement of or contracting of strategic,
technical and operational support services to the Strategic Programmes and
Project Management Office of the Municipality.”
“The proclamation covers offences
which took place between 1 October 2017 and 29 July 2022, the date of
publication of this Proclamation,” said SIU spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago.
Kganyago added that the
investigation will cover any offences which took place prior to 1 October 2017
or after the date of publication of the Proclamation that are relevant to,
connected with, incidental to the matters or involve the same persons, entities
or connected with incidental to the matters or involve the same persons,
entities or contracts investigated under the authority of Proclamation R80 of
2022.
OR Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor Mesuli Ngqondwana acknowledged the proclamation and called for
cooperation with the SIU investigation.
“We acknowledge the proclamation
as made by the President and we support it. I also make the commitment to
engage with all who will be required to communicate with the SIU in its
investigation.”
“We are of the view that this
will go a long way in cleaning the affairs of the institution and restoring
public confidence in how we run our affairs as the district municipality,”
Ngqondwana said.
