TEMBISA Special School in Mthatha hosted an art festival, where they demonstrated work that had been done by their learners, last week.

The principal of the school, Mzimasi Magqabi, said that in 2017 they implemented a curriculum of artwork. He said they did this because their learners were unable to write but they are good in skills.

“We then took a decision that they should show people their work by demonstrating what they are doing. Some of them are specialising in needlework, baking, arts and crafts, and hairdressing.”

Magqabi added that this demonstration would uplift the spirits of others living with disabilities.

“Even if you are living with a disability, that is not a death sentence. You can still do something with your own hands. While people were celebrating Heritage Month, we decided to host our art festival because we felt there was a need to do so.”

These learners were also given certificates of appreciation just to show them love and support in what they are doing. According to Magqabi, even though they have this curriculum, some of the learners do not benefit, due to their conditions, but still the school is trying by all means to accommodate them.

School governing body (SGB) treasurer, Khanyiso Mbongo, said they were so impressed to see the talent of their children. He said he always advises other parents to support their children and ensure that they come to school whenever they have activities.

“I have a son who attends this school. I am proud because this shows that one day they can be able to do something for themselves. I like cooking, even though I am a man, but I never baked. When I see what they have done, they inspire me a lot and we wish community members could use them by placing orders for birthday parties,” said Mbongo.
