JUVENTUS FC from Libode and Newlands Netball team from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, were both crowned champions of the annual Khiwa Media Tournament, this past weekend.
Juventus FC won R 25 000, gold medals, and soccer kit, while Newlands Netball won R15 000, gold medals and a netball kit.
The annual tournament, founded three years ago by Bulelani Mancotywa, is one of the biggest annual sporting tournaments in the Eastern Cape.
“This year’s tournament was a success both in netball and soccer and the performance was exciting,” Mancotywa said.
“The most exciting part was that some of Juventus FC players were scouted by Jerry Skosana and the players will play for the Skosana team in the SAB League in Gauteng.”
Mancotywa said this is what they have been dreaming about, seeing rural players getting opportunities in big teams in South Africa.
Ntombi Mavana, who is the head coach of Newlands Netball team, said she felt very excited for the girls.
“My team’s performance was very high in the tournament and I was very impressed,” said Mavana.
“Thank you, Khiwa Media, for such a big tournament like this,” she said.
Mavana said the final match was much easier than the semi-final.
The tournament was held at Nomcamba location, in Ngqeleni, this past weekend.
