WSU Ladies clinched the SAFA OR Tambo inland stream (Mthatha stream) title in dramatic circumstances after winning it with a 15 goal difference.
WSU Ladies and Nothintwa Ladies finished the league tied on 13 points, but the goal difference worked in favour of WSU Ladies.
Nothintwa Ladies only managed to score nine goals in the league.
It was not an easy journey for the WSU troops, as the Nothintwa Ladies were also eyeing the championship and had been leading the log since the beginning of the league. Unfortunately, they lost the championship in the last game of the season, after losing 3-1 against WSU Ladies, at WSU Stadium, on Saturday.
Going into the final match against WSU last week, the Mqanduli troops, Nothintwa Ladies,, only needed a draw to take the championship but they failed to claim the minimum points or a draw.
WSU Ladies’ coach, Sandile Bimbi, said he was delighted that his troops managed to be victorious against the difficult Nothintwa Ladies, as it was a massive win for them.
“It was a difficult, competitive league this season, showing that women’s football is growing in the OR Tambo region.”
Bimbi said they are now preparing for the decider match against the champions from the Inland stream.
The champions, WSU Ladies, are going to play an OR Tambo Regional League decider against the champions of coastal stream 9 (Port St Johns stream), but the coastal stream league is still continuing as the teams each have three games left to play.
