An award-winning mathematics teacher from Bakuba Primary School in Ntabankulu, Peggy Jona, has urged maths teachers to love this subject and to ensure that they are using technology to make things easier for themselves.

Jona represented the Eastern Cape in the National Teaching Awards (NTA) in Pretoria, last week.

She said she competed against eight provinces in the excellence in GET mathematics category and came third in the country.

“I have shown skills in integrating mathematics with information communication and technology. I use a technology enhanced teaching and learning style and this has helped learners who had a negative attitude towards mathematics,” said Jona.

She added that she encouraged other teachers to work smart by integrating their teaching with ICT, which brings maths to the real world. Jona added that she also used coding to bring maths to reality.

“Coding helps me to develop young programmers which will not only bring change to the economy of South Africa but will bring Global change. Coding has also improved learners’ confidence and learners’ performance in mathematics.”

She confirmed that she was very surprised when she received good news that she had won.

Jona said she did not know that she was shining in her corner. “My subject advisor noticed my work and my performance she then asked me to assist other teachers.”
