Mthatha Crime Patrol Forum members are trying to minimise the high crime rate in the Central Business District (CBD).

According to the Mthatha Crime Patrol Forum coordinator, Shakes Mbengo, the initiative started in August last year.

“We were tired of people who were robbing others in town and we are now working together with the police officers,” Mbengo said.

“We decided to collect weapons from some of the people who are carrying them around town as of Monday last week. We then took these weapons to the police station. Even now, we are continuing with our patrol. The more we take from them, the more the high crime rate will decrease.”

He added that people can now walk around freely in York Road and Sutherland Street due to the work they are doing.

“We are not taking the law into our hands, but we want to protect the society,” he said.
