A Grade 12 learner, Kuhle Sithelo (18), from St John’s College in Mthatha, won the High School Poetry Challenge 2023, hosted by members of the Soul Clap Session in Mthatha, recently.
This was the fourth challenge held at Mthatha Community Arts Centre. Sithelo said that she wanted to participate last year, but she could not because she was staying in a hostel.
“It was not allowed that we go out, but now parents have a right to call our matrons to grant permission of going if there is a need,” said Sithelo.
She added that it was not easy because she had to multitask; she had to make sure that she has not been left behind with her school work.
According to her, when her name was announced as the first winner she could not believe it, and became emotional because she had not expected this since the challenge was very tough.
“I was very afraid and worried that I would forget my lyrics while on stage, but that did not happen. I can advise those who are still willing to participate to ensure that they prepare themselves. They must also believe in their words.”
Sithelo confirmed that she would enter other competitions if she gets another chance.
She said she is willing to do Industrial Pharmacy next year but will not forget her talent.
