The netball world cup trophy will touch down in Mthatha this coming Friday, June 30.
This is part of a trophy tour to all the provinces ahead of the official kickoff of the netball world cup, which will be held in Cape Town on Friday, July 28.
The opening match will be between South Africa and Wales, in Cape Town.
Young netball enthusiasts under the OR Tambo Region can’t wait for the trophy to arrive in Mthatha this coming Friday.
Nobuhle Makeleni, who is one of the rural players, said she is excited for the big day and to hold the trophy with her own hands.
Makeleni’s dream is to be a Protea player one day, and play with her favourite player, Bongiwe Msomi.
Makeleni is currently playing for the Tambo Netball Team.
This will be the first time for rural netballers to see and touch the trophy.
It is also the first time that the African continent hosts the Netball World Cup.
Netball South Africa and the trophy are expected to be welcomed by the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality mayor, Nyaniso Nelani, this Friday in Mthatha.
