Newly-elected president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) in the Amathole region, Mbongeni Matanga, and his committee, have promised to focus on the development of sport in all areas under Amathole.

Matanga, who contributed substantially to the Mnquma Local Football Association (Mnquma LFA) before he was elected to SAFA President in Amathole on July 30, said that their main aim as the new leadership is to revive local women’s football leagues in all divisions who were not active in recent years.

He said by reviving those leagues in all regions under Amathole, it would also assist teams competing in high divisions, like the Hollywoodbets Super League, to recruit quality players from those local divisions.

The SAFA structure in Amathole is also planning to request teams who have no junior teams to establish or form them, because they wanted the development of players to start at an early age.

Matanga said that as the SAFA leadership they wanted all teams in local football associations to have junior teams that include u/13, u/15, u/17, and u/19, because those young teams are helping to feed senior teams with players.

In the Mnquma area and some regions under Amathole there are no local leagues for females that are active, so it means SAFA will be expected to assist to revive women’s football, including in Butterworth.
