The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality has set aside R3.7 million for rolling out high mast lights in several wards, as part of its efforts to curb crime especially during the night.
This was revealed by the municipality’s infrastructure services portfolio head, Councillor Ziyanda Nokayi, during a community meeting with residents of Chris Hani Park, which forms part of the crime-rife Mthatha West of KSD municipality.
Nokayi said that the provision of high mast lights will curb crime, ease policing, and ensure that residents lived in a safe and secure environment.
The municipality plans to install 10 high mast lights which are 30 metres tall in various areas, including Chatham Street, Mbuqe Extension, Mbuqe Cemetery, Callaway, Mandela Park, Slovo Park and Chris Hani Park.
The municipality has appointed SNR Electrical to undertake the rollout programme which is envisaged to create 17 temporary job opportunities for the four month implementation period.
Meanwhile Nokayi, together with KSD executive mayor, Nyaniso Nelani, recently introduced Sizakancane Trading Enterprise 72 as the appointed service provider for the construction of Zingolweni, Gaduka to Mhlabubomvu access road.
The 15km-long project will create 30 job opportunities for locals, while two small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) will be sub-contracted.
