The King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality has revealed that its law enforcement officers arrested four suspects who were attempting to steal scrap cables from the electricity department at Southernwood on the night of October 25, 2023, around midnight.
According to municipal spokesperson Sonwabo Mampoza, the suspects are between 29 and 35 years old.
“The suspects broke in through the window to get inside the building. They were arrested inside while they were still busy pulling the cable out of the window. Subsequently, a case of cable theft was opened at Central Police Station, and suspects were expected to appear in court today, October 30, 2023,” said Mampoza.
The cable, valued at R150 000, was reserved by the municipality for possible auction.
“KSD municipality strongly condemns such criminal activity because it has a negative impact on the revenue that is required for service delivery,” Mampoza added.
The municipality has urged everyone, including businesses that are dealing with scrap metal, to refrain from buying stolen cables.
It further encouraged community members to report any suspicious activities using the KSD Call Centre number, 047 531 0963.
