Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha, Dr Vuyani Booi, confirmed that a German delegation visited the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha, to strengthen their relationship and identify programmes of collaboration, last week.

This country has long-lasting relations with the museum as every year the museum conducts its International Youth Camp in Germany, and learners from all over the province are taken to their sites of interest.

“This is a collaboration which I started as the CEO of Nelson Mandela Museum, with the German Embassy in particular, and through this embassy we will be able to work with German institutions, individuals and organisations. The purpose of this collaboration is to ensure that we share the values and the stories of the late Nelson Mandela with the people of the world,” said Booi.

He added that it is also to tell the people of the world about the great strides, achievements, and the gifts of Nelson Mandela that he gave to the world.

Booi emphasised that this collaboration is about to work closely with the German people, so that they can assist them with the projects which would make them, as the Nelson Mandela staff, to be culpable of keeping the legacy of Mandela.

One of the things that we are looking forward to having out of this collaboration is the staff exchange programmes; we are looking forward to having the Nelson Mandela Museum employees, those who are managing the collection the gift of Nelson Mandela, to be trained overseas in order to be exposed to those opportunities. We are also looking forward to the staff of Nelson Mandela Museum attending institutions of higher learning in Germany, like universities, where they will learn the necessary skills, so that they can come back and plough these back into the communities.

He said that for instance, in Qunu they have an accommodation facility, so they want people who are trained to be able to manage that facility, etc.

The German ambassador to South Africa, Andreas Perschke, said that they had visited Mvezo, Mqhekezweni Great Place and Qunu Museum, which are the memorial sites of Nelson Mandela.

He said that they wanted to see where this global icon was born and bred.

“We are also looking for opportunities for collaboration with museums in South Africa, and Germany. We are looking at supporting each other and exchanging notes and experiences. This will be a continuing relationship,” said Perschke.
