The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape has announced the appointment of seasoned top cop, Brigadier Bekekile Waka (58), as the new Station Commander of Lusikisiki Police Station.
The experienced Waka has served as a policeman for over 30 years, having undergone basic police training at Mthatha Police College in 1993, and was subsequently stationed at Linge Police Station as a constable.
In 1997, Waka moved from Linge Police Station to Komani (formerly Queenstown), where he was attached to the Queenstown Area Commissioner’s office responsible for human resource management and dealing with disciplinary matters, promotions, and medical aid issues.
He also had a short stint with the Queenstown Flying Squad from 2002 to September 2003, when he was appointed as acting station commander of Sterkstroom.
Waka was appointed Sterkstroom Station Commander on a full-time basis in December 2004 with the rank of captain.
“In 2015, as a lieutenant-colonel, he was appointed the Station Commander of Ezibeleni, a position he served until 2019 when he became a full colonel as Mqanduli Police Station Commander.
“Through his hard work and dedication, he has now been promoted to the rank of brigadier and appointed Lusikisiki Station Commander, with effect from January 1,” said OR Tambo District police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo.
According to the SAPS annual crime statistics for the 2022/2023 financial year, the Lusikisiki Police Station was ranked second nationally as the station with the most reported sexual offences, while it also ranked 28th nationally from the top 30 police stations with the highest number of registered murder cases.
OR Tambo District Police Commissioner, Major General Pumzile Cetyana, and his deputy, Brigadier Vukile Ntandane, have congratulated Waka on his appointment and called on him to work closely with his predecessor, Colonel Siyabulela Kufa, who was acting in the position of Lusikisiki Police Station Commander.
