The Eastern Cape’s wet roads have claimed 10 lives across the province over the weekend in four separate crashes.

Department of Transport provincial spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the first fatal crash was reported on the N6 road between Cathcart and Komani, where two people died.

The accident was a head-on collision between an articulated truck and a bakkie.

“Sunday proved to be the worst day as persistent rains, with wet and slippery conditions and poor visibility in some areas, wreaked havoc on the roads. Two separate crashes accounted for 6 lives. The first of those occurred on the N2 between KwaBhaca and Qumbu, another head-on collision involving a bakkie and a VW Polo claimed three lives.”

Binqose said later in the day, three more people, including a pedestrian, died in a crash that occurred on the R61 between Mthatha and Libode.

He said a VW Polo knocked a pedestrian dead and hit two more vehicles, a Nissan Micra and an Isuzu bakkie.

“By the end of it all, the pedestrian, the VW Polo driver, and the driver of the Nissan Micra all died on the scene.

“And the latest of these claimed two lives on the R67 road between Fort Beaufort and Seymour in the early hours of this morning at about 01:00.  A VW Polo collided with a Ford Escort, two people died on the scene while the injured were rushed to a hospital in Fort Beaufort,” he said.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened for each of the crashes, he said.

“Motorists are urged to remain vigilant as persistent rains continue to hit most parts of the province,” Binqose said.
