The co-ordinator of Mgwali Retirees Association from Ngcobo, Daniel Teenage Sotyato, said that they started this association with the aim of ensuring that they support each other, as retirees.

Sotyato confirmed that this was started in March this year, and that they have 31 members so far.

According to him, they realised that some of the retirees do not check their benefits with insurance companies, and it is left until they pass away, so they will advise each other about such.

Our motto is unga gugeli endlwini, and by this slogan we are trying to motivate and care for each other. Another problem that we have is that we do not know even if one of us is facing some challenges like health problems or abuse. By doing this it will be easy now for us to know what is happening to one of us and intervene where we can.

He added that this is not only for the people who are the former employees of the Department of Education, but all former employees from both the public and private sectors.

According to him, they want to be united, and they will also host wellness days, when they will invite nurses from the Department of Health to come and provide services.

“We are planning this wellness day to happen four times a year. Also, we want to travel and see some places like the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn.”

He added that registration to join is R100. Secretary for Mgwali Retirees Association, Thembela Salman, said that this initiative would help them remain busy.

“We are willing to do some projects so that we always have something to do,” said Salman.
