Parents and the coach expressed excitement after one of their players, Somila Gani (14), was selected to be part of the South African U/15 squad that travelled to Namibia to represent South Africa at the CAF African School Championship.

The tournament was held in Namibia from 8-13 October, with participating countries including Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini.

During the tournament in Namibia, Somila netted six goals for the country and even won the Player of the Match award against Eswatini after scoring a hat-trick (three goals) in their 4-0 victory.

Somila was selected during the FNB Championship tournament held in Gauteng province in September.

She left Mthatha airport last week, accompanied by Coastal Ladies FC teammates, coaches, Councillor Siphokazi Madyum, and parents.

Coastal Ladies head coach, Vuyolwethu Mhlathi said this is a huge achievement that shows the good results and development they are achieving as a team in Ngangelizwe location.

Somila’s mother, Nosipho Gani, said she is very thrilled to see her daughter representing the country and encouraged other parents to allow their children to play sport.

Somila is expected to fly back to Mthatha this week.

During the CAF African Schools Football Championship in Walvis Bay, Namibia, on Sunday, South Africa was crowned champion for both boys and girls.
