Abongile Apleni (22), from the Shixini locality in Willowvale, is appealing to any Good Samaritan for assistance with shelter, as her family is living in a dilapidated two-roomed house that could collapse at any moment.

She explained that they are a family of five, with no one currently employed.

Their home is made of sticks and mud, and anyone walking outside can see what is happening inside due to its poor condition.

“I look for temporary jobs so we can survive. My mother is unable to work because she has to care for my aunt, who is also sick.

We have tried many times to ask for help, but nothing has come through. I keep praying that one day we will have a decent home like other people.

She added that changing weather brings them anxiety.

“When the weather changes, we get worried because we don’t know what will happen. On top of that, we often get sick with fevers due to the poor living conditions.”

She said that every time the summer season starts, they are always worried because it is often raining, and they hold their breath.

The spokesperson for Mbhashe Local Municipality, Babalwa Magqwanti, confirmed that the municipality is aware of the situation.

“The municipality has recently learned of the family’s circumstances and is planning a visit by the Developmental Planning Department to conduct an assessment.

“We are working urgently to submit an application to the Department of Human Settlements for the provision of a temporary structure,” concluded Magqwanti.
