THE Eastern Cape Department of Education has cautioned its circuit managers and schools to uphold the policy on readmission of learners wishing to repeat Year 12 full-time for consistency and fairness, as failing to do so is unlawful.
The department stated that schools should admit both unsuccessful learners and those looking to improve their results.
However, the Head of Department, Sharon Maasdorp, explained that admissions would depend on individual circumstances. She clarified the department’s stance on learners repeating Year 12 in 2025.
“Admission will be guided by existing policies, with consideration given to the learner’s age and academic history. Learners up to the age of 20 are eligible for admission, while those aged 21 and above will require approval from the Head of Department,” Maasdorp stated.
Schools offering Year 12 were encouraged to prioritise repeat learners from their own institutions. Maasdorp mentioned that a limited number of external repeat candidates may be admitted, subject to the availability of resources and support materials.
“Schools are warned against turning learners away, as it is illegal. Despite that, I emphasise that multiple repetitions of the same year are not permitted. Therefore, Circuit Managers are tasked with ensuring this policy is effectively communicated and consistently implemented across all schools to uphold fairness and consistency,” Maasdorp said.
She reiterated that the Department of Education is committed to fostering academic excellence and supporting learners in their educational journey.
