The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed that most provincial roads remain open and drivable despite recent adverse weather conditions that caused flooding and damage to several routes.
In an update on today, departmental spokesperson Unathi Binqose said no snow-induced road closures have been reported, though flooding continues to affect some areas in the Karoo.

“Our roads, there are no snow-induced closures, definitely none. The flooding remains an issue in some areas in the Karoo, but we are there redirecting traffic,” Binqose said.
The department is currently assessing damage to affected roads, with the R62 between Graaff-Reinet and Joubertina emerging as the most severely impacted route.

“We are assessing damage in those roads that were damaged, including the R62 between Graaff-Reinet and Joubertina, and of course, the William Moffett. The one on R62 between Graaff-Reinet and Joubertina is by far the biggest we’ve suffered so far,” Binqose explained.
Cleanup operations are underway in areas affected by mudslides and rock falls, with the spokesperson noting improved weather conditions.
“Cleanup operations are underway where we had experienced mudslides and rock falls, but most of our roads are drivable and the weather conditions have improved significantly. So we’re pleased to report back on that,” Binqose said.
