EASTERN CAPE – Operation Shanella II has resulted in the arrest of 1 228 suspects for various crimes between 15-21 September.

According to the police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, who also noted that 16 unlicensed firearms were recovered.

He noted that most of the suspects in serious offences were charged, and their cases were enrolled in the various magisterial courts of the Eastern Cape.

According to Nkohli, there were notable actions that were recorded:

• 45 roadblocks and 820 vehicle checkpoints manned
• 29 578 people searched
• 10 809 motor vehicles searched
• 652 private properties searched
• 2 277 liquor outlets inspected
• 5 shebeens closed
• 14 786 spaza shops inspected

He termed the following arrests as significant developments:

• 88 motorists nabbed for drunk driving
• 270 suspects for possession of illicit drugs
• 293 suspects for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm
• 102 suspects for common assault
• 43 shebeen owners fined for operating unlicensed liquor outlets
• 16 suspects for illegal possession of firearms

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso has commended various stakeholders for their dedication in these operations and actions.

“Our work is measurable, and the ground forces are doing exceptional work, with a special focus on hot-spot areas in all the districts of the province. The ultimate scale in measuring the success of these actions is our clients, meaning the people of the Eastern Cape, who are affected either directly or indirectly by criminal activities,” added Kupiso.
