MTHATHA – The King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality advised all community members and travellers of the current inclement weather conditions affecting the area. Mayoral spokesperson Olwethu Mabovula said as the municipality is prone to disasters, they urge everyone to exercise caution during this period.
“Heavy rains have caused some bridges in Mqanduli and other areas in Mthatha to overflow, preventing people from crossing safely. Roads are wet and slippery, and conditions may change quickly. Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads and bridges and never attempt to cross moving or rising water,” she said.
She urged community members to use alternative routes where possible and follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
Mabovula said they strongly encourage those planning to travel to or from KSD Municipality to consider postponing their trips where possible until weather conditions improve.
“Residents, especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. So far there are no reports of fatalities and rescue teams are on high alert. The municipality is also aware that several areas are experiencing electricity outages. Municipal electricians are working to restore power in the affected areas.”
Residents are urged to treat fallen power lines as dangerous and report them immediately.
Mabovula added that KSD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
“We appeal to all residents to monitor local weather updates regularly. Current forecasts indicate that the weather conditions are expected to clear by Thursday.
“Should residents experience or witness any emergency or disaster-related incidents, they must contact the KSD Disaster Management Officials immediately, Fuzile on 083 896 4642 or Sifanele on 073 080 188.”
Mbhashe Local Municipality mayor Samkelo Janda also urged residents and motorists in the municipality to stay cautious and avoid crossing rivers, overflowing streams or low-lying bridges.
“Motorists are urged to adhere to traffic rules and speed restrictions. We encourage citizens to remain indoors during this time, unless it is unsafe to do so. Let us all monitor the weather conditions and stay alert for regular updates on radio and social media platforms.”
