A talented young chess player from Kwa-Nomzamo, Yomelela Pongolo (13), and her coach, Zolani Sibengile, urgently need financial support to participate in upcoming provincial championships hosted by the Sarah Baartman District Chess Union on May 10 in Graaff-Reinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pongolo, a learner at Mzingisi Primary School, was introduced to chess through training offered by the Douglas Matsha People’s Association (Domapa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The talented chess player won a bronze medal at the Mayor’s Cup recently, and she has been selected to compete in the Sarah Baartman Closed Chess Championships in Graaff-Reinet on May 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Loyiso Matsha, President of Domapa, said that Pongolo has the potential to be in the South African junior chess team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Coming from difficult circumstances in Kwa-Nomzamo, she faces the prospect of missing this crucial opportunity unless financial assistance is secured,” said Matsha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, her coach, Sibengile, who recently claimed first place in the Mayor’s Cup finals, is set to compete in the Open Section in Graaff-Reinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matsha said that the total amount needed for both Pongolo and Sibengile to attend their respective championships is R2 400.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This would cover their travel expenses to the competitions, which represent significant stepping stones in their chess careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We are requesting assistance for both Yomelela and her coach,” said Matsha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Without this support, these talented individuals will miss the chance to showcase their skills at a provincial level.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
