The excitement was palpable as the community gathered to witness the official opening of the newly renovated Loerie Sports Field on Saturday, March 8, marking a joyous milestone for local sports enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Loerie Blues Rugby team had the honour of playing the first game on the revamped grounds, taking on the formidable United Barbarians. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the team’s 31-14 loss, the spirited residents were unfazed, enjoying the long-awaited opportunity to enjoy rugby on home turf once again. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The multi-purpose field, designed to host soccer, rugby, netball, and cricket, underwent significant upgrades funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) at a cost of more than R9 million. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, cut the ribbon, opening the facility, in August last year, after the completion of the project. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was handed over to Community Services in September 2024. However, the facility required additional time for the pitch to mature before it was game-ready. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The upgraded project included:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of the boundary wall \u2013 to secure the sports field\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of clubhouse\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Installation of toilets and system\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building a new netball court\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of new cricket court\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of rugby\/soccer pitch\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of seating arrangements\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Building of caretaker house\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Installation of borehole\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Installation of lights\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The opening of the Loerie Sports Field is a testament to our commitment to investing in community development and providing opportunities for our youth,” said Bornman. “Sport has the power to unite, uplift, and inspire, and I have no doubt that this facility will become a hub of talent and camaraderie for years to come.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The new sportsfield is open!
