KOUGA Municipality has brightened up the lives of more than 100 households at Humansdorp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks switched on the electricity to 116 homes at Donkerhoek on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mood was joyous as the Mayor was hoisted to the transformer for the official switch-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ward councillor Freddy Campher thanked the municipality for making Donkerhoek a priority in its electrification programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe know the need is great in many areas and are thankful for the work the municipality has done here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the beneficiaries, Mayor Hendricks said developing informal settlements into urban areas would be a focus point throughout his term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to see services installed at informal areas and houses being built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere is still a lot of work that needs to be done here at Donkerhoek and it will take time, but the Council is fully committed to walking the long road with residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hendricks further challenged residents to think of a new name for their neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy predecessor, the late Mayor Elza van Lingen, switched on electricity to 250 households at Donkerhoek last year. It is my privilege to complete what she started. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith so many homes shining a light, this community can no longer be called \u2018Donkerhoek\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI invite residents to come up with a new name that reflects the bright future we want to help build for this community, most especially for the children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Kouga would also be switching on electricity at the Kruisfontein housing development before the end of June and that almost R10-million has been budgeted for further electrification projects in the new financial year, starting July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
