TRANSPORT, Safety and Liaison MEC Weziwe Tikana officially unveiled the newly constructed Sand River Bridge on Friday, September 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The R43-million bridge replaces the original 15m-long span multi-portal culvert structure with a 27m long three-span bridge on a floating concrete footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2011 the original bridge across the Sand River, which formed the only link between Humansdorp and St Francis Bay, washed away following torrential rains and floods in the area, effectively cutting off vehicular access into St Francis, a community of several thousand persons including many elderly and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several days the only access to the residents of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis was by boat across the flooded Sand River<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n To restore access a temporary structure was constructed across the Sand River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur efforts are geared towards ensuring that there is a conducive environment for ordinary members of the community and business people alike to access basic services as well as economic opportunities,\u201d said MEC Weziwe Tikana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe are most proud that our communities will now have unrestricted access to schools, clinics,
