KOUGA Municipality\u2019s leadership, the religious fraternity and farming community of Patensie gathered in praise and worship at the Kouga Dam on Friday, giving thanks for the recent rains and praying for the ongoing drought to be broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mass prayer was opened by Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks, who spent a number of years in the area as a teacher and headmaster at the nearby Andrieskraal Primary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are truly thankful that the Lord has heard our prayers. I have worked for many years in this area and I have seen the dam fill up and overflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was shocking for me to see how low the water level had become and how long the rain stayed away,\u201d he said<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hendricks said although Kouga had some good rainfall over the past weeks, this did not mean that the community could now be complacent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If anything, the Mayor said, the recent drought brought about a new culture of taking good care of water, a finite resource essential to life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTogether, we must cement the new normal in Kouga \u2013 save water!\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ward 10 Councillor Amos Mabukane thanked the Patensie community for standing and praying together throughout the drought crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe are an agricultural community and depend heavily on water for the economy of the area to thrive. We came here, united, to pray before the rains and we are back again to thank the Father for answering our prayers,\u201d said Mabukane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chairman of the Gamtoos Valley Farmers Association, Spes du Preez, on behalf of the congregation, thanked everyone who contributed towards making the day a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kouga Dam is standing above 51,7%, up from below 7% when the drought was at its harshest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another prayer day will be held by the Mighty Men Eastern Cape and the municipality this Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is set to take place at the Farm Mooi Uitsig, off the R102 between Jeffreys Bay and Mondplaas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The session will start at 09:00 and culminate in a bring and braai from noon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
