A NEW mathematics App, called SigmaX, has been launched to assist pupils at two Uitenhage schools to visualise and understand mathematics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An actuarial science master\u2019s student, Athi Rxewu, the mastermind behind the App, has returned to the Eastern Cape from her studies abroad to showcase her latest maths app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rwexu took the app on a road show in the Eastern Cape with the hope of enabling pupils to improving their mathematics marks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the Eastern Cape always performing poorly in matric, especially in mathematics results, the new app will play a huge role in helping them to understand the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe root of the issue we have with mathematics in the country starts in the foundation phase if not addressed at an early stage. Parental support is often missing and classrooms are too full. The foundation of these learners is not strong enough\u201d, said President of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA), Dr Va-suthavan Govender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team has been visiting schools across the province and doing presentations on how the app works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rwexu adds that no pupils should under perform in the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always found that mathematics is quite easy for me \u2013 especially high school maths, or school maths, as a person who\u2019s always gotten distinctions in maths. So I realised that we can actually do something to help learners understand maths better\u201d, Rwexu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learners have shown a keen interest in the app, hoping it will play a role in helping them improve their marks in mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parents also agree they hope the app is a solution to the problems their children are currently experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
