A Men\u2019s Dialogue will be held to mark the launch of this year\u2019s 16 Days of Activism campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Men from Kouga Municipality\u2019s leadership, government departments, community and non-governmental organisations, business and the community in general are set to join in a social dialogue about gender-based violence, child abuse and the effects these have on victims and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dialogue will take place on Tuesday, November 27, at the Dan Sandi Hall in Patensie and will start at 10am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said the event would serve as Kouga\u2019s own \u201cMen\u2019s Parliament\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe look forward to hearing men\u2019s views around gender-based violence. The dialogue will be an opportunity to learn from these views while also raising awareness among those in attendance about the impact of such violence on families and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe statistics show that most perpetrators of violent crimes against women, children and the elderly are men. We, therefore, saw a need to have this very important conversation among men and to identify what our role would be in turning the tide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hendricks said they had noted, as leadership and stakeholders, that very few men attend gatherings that speak on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis has to change in order for men to be part of the solution and play a leading role in combating the scourge. We have to come out and say: \u2018Not in our name!\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have to commit that we will not look away while women and children live in fear in our presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe hope that, as men, we will use this opportunity to have our eyes opened and to kill the myths and stereotypes that seek to justify the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of women and children by men,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A door-to-door educational campaign, targeting informal settlements, has been taking place in the Gamtoos Valley area this past week as part of the build-up to the \u201c16 days\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Municipal officials and volunteers from NGOs kicked off the campaign in Stofwolk in Hankey on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 16 Days of Activism campaign is an annual, worldwide initiative that opposes violence against women and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aims are to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence has on women and children and to find ways to rid society of abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It takes place from 25 November until 10 December and includes World Aids Day, which is marked on the first of next month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
