MORE than 100 potholes were fixed in a single street at Hankey this week as Kouga Municipality continued its drive to repair rain-damaged roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said acting foreman George Laminnie and his team had repaired 124 potholes in Tshume Street, Hankey, this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey have already done extensive work in Patensie and will be moving on to other roads in Hankey as well, \u201c he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Road repairs have also been ongoing in other Kouga towns, with foreman Johnson Katoo and his team repairing 117 potholes in Gazelle Street, Jeffreys Bay, on Monday and Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are still calculating the total number of potholes that have been repaired since September but expect the total to be far more than 1000,\u201d Hendricks said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe would like to thank all our road repair teams for the good work they have been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foremen Sydney Lamont and Patrick Dayimani have been leading the road repair teams at St Francis and Humansdorp respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hendricks said the rain damage was made worse by years of neglect by previous Councils to maintain the region\u2019s internal road network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe lifespan of a road is only about 20 to 25 years, then it has to be rebuilt. Roads also have to be resealed at least once every seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMost roads in Kouga are far older than 25 years and have never been resealed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis means that the entire road network actually needs to be rebuilt and that filling potholes is simply a temporary fix for a far more serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hendricks said securing external funding to upgrade Kouga\u2019s roads was essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt costs about R4,5 million to build one kilometre of road. The municipality simply does not have sufficient income to rebuild the entire network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are, therefore, exploring alternative sources of funding to implement a long-term solution to Kouga\u2019s road problem.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
