EXTRA safety measures have been put in place to prevent drownings at two of Jeffreys Bay\u2019s most dangerous beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks said five red torpedo buoys have been placed at sea at Albatros Beach and Magna\u2019s, near Checkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThree have been placed at Albatros and two at Magna\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cBoth these beaches are known for their strong rip currents and are not safe for swimming nor are there lifeguards on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe idea is for these buoys to serve as a floatation aid should anyone get caught in a rip current.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg cautioned that the buoys should not be seen as a safety net or a target to swim to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe urge the public to swim only at those beaches patrolled by lifeguards and only between the flags,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
