IRATE Jeffreys Bay residents reached the end of their tether with the ongoing noise pollution plaguing their once quiet neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
Residents expressed their frustration at the ongoing noise emanating from the nearby informal settlement, Ocean View, at full throttle for the past seven months, especially over weekends; as well as the perceived lack of control exercised by authorities.<\/p>\n
Sleep-deprived and concerned C-Place-resident, Francois Pretorius from Lantern Street, says, \u201cThe area and surrounding suburbs are being plagued by uncontrollable, illegal noise levels coming from licensed and unlicensed taverns in Ocean View.<\/p>\n
\u201cBlaring music keeps us all awake and exhausted. Weekends are the worst – the noise can go on all day and all night.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Pretorius, who reached out to the Kouga Municipality and Jeffreys Bay Police Station to no avail, there are very clearly stipulated by-laws that protect home owners against this type of behaviour.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething needs to be done about the unacceptable noise levels in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Community Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson says, \u201cThe municipality\u2019s Law Enforcement unit has responded to several noise pollution complaints over the past month. In most instances the noise emana-ted from church services being held at houses and not from ta-verns.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a complaint is received, the Law Enforcement Officers would typically visit the tavern or home church and verbally warn those in charge that the music needs to be turned down so that it is not audible outside the premises. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf they refuse to comply or simply turn up the volume again as soon as the authorities have left, they can then be fined.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says that the challenge occurs when they still refuse to comply. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe next step would be to confiscate the instruments or equipment that are being used, how- ever, for this to happen, the complainant first needs to make a formal statement and a docket must be opened at the police station. <\/span><\/p>\n \n \u201cThis can be a tedious process and does not bring immediate relief to the complainant, but it is the best way to secure a permanent. long-term solution<\/span>.\u201d <\/p>\n Jeffreys Bay Police Station Commander Lt. Col. Makhoasa Lenah Kiviet says that police members attended to a number of the complaints received, but no noise could be heard at the time of the police\u2019s arrival at Ocean View. <\/p>\n \u201cDue to
