RE<\/span>SIDENTS of Donkerhoek are feeling safer at night following the installation of the first flood lights in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Long-time resident Audrey van Louw said the new lights had already made a difference in the lives of her family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never used to feel safe at night because there was a group of troublemakers who liked to hang around nearby when it got dark. We haven\u2019t seen them since the lights were switched on,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

The flood lights were recently installed by Kouga Municipality and are the first public lighting to be put in place in Donkerhoek, an informal settlement in Humansdorp.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrime, including gang-related violence, has been on the increase in the area,\u201d said Kouga Infrastructure and Engineering Portfolio Councillor, Freddy Campher.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a tremendous concern for the almost 400 families living in Donkerhoek.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said all sites in the settlement were electrified almost two years ago so that families would have access to power in their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis improved people\u2019s quality of life, but they still feared being outside at night because it was easy for criminals to hide in the dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very pleased that we have been able to improve residents\u2019 sense of security. Many do not have access to transport and have to walk wherever they need to go, be it work, school or church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Campher said the municipality would also be installing public lights from Felix Street at Kruisfontein Primary to Kruisfontein Proper.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, the completion of this project has been delayed due to theft and vandalism. The main cable was stolen not long after installation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called on members of the community to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to report this to the nearest police station or the municipality\u2019s 24\/7 emergency number at 042 291 0250 or 042 200 2200 (press option \u201cone\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cOur communities are the ones who lose the most when municipal infrastructure is damaged,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
