Jeffreys Bay boasts some of the top craft beers in the country \u2013 if not the best.<\/p>\n
Leading the way with their unique craft beers, Brewhaha JBay won top awards at the recent 2019 South African National Beer Trophy (SANBT) awards: silver for Stormy Seas (IPA) and silver for Endless Summer (Blonde Ale).<\/p>\n
In 2018, they walked away with gold for their brew Stormy Seas (IPA) and silver for Moonlit Beach (American Wheat Beer) and Endless Summer (Blonde Ale).<\/p>\n
The SANBT is South Africa\u2019s premier beer competition and it is the driving force behind the rise in beer quality and consistency.<\/p>\n
Beers are judged out of 50 according to the BJCP guide, which outlines every beer style in great detail.<\/p>\n
In order to win a silver medal, the pass mark is 39\/50, and for gold it is 41\/50. Judging took place over several weeks by 25 judges, including BJCP judges, wine sommeliers, celebrity chefs and Cicerones (another beer judge certification programme).<\/p>\n
On winning the awards, Brewhaha co-owner and brewmaster Marius Deetlefs, says, \u201cI am over the moon. I have worked hard to develop my recipes since we started brewing in 2016. The medals communicate to our local supporters that we were not a one-hit-wonder last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competition is fierce and we are up against the giants in the industry. For us as a baby brewery, the medals are so encouraging and people in the industry take note of us here in Jeffreys Bay.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe medals encourage us to keep pushing ourselves to brew even greater beer. I believe that being innovative with new beers is the way forward. I believe it is important for our loyal customers to taste and experience just how far we can take our craft.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Deetlefs, Brewhaha – who added a new 1 000l fermenter to keep up with the demand, did the best of any other brewery in the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n
Their winning recipe? \u201cOne word: consistency!\u201d says Deetlefs.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have to be able to brew good beer on a consistent basis. We use only grain from Belgium, as well as hops from the United States and Europe. You may have a winning recipe in hand, but the ingredients can let you down big time \u2013 it is usually the part young brewers overlook.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brewhaha just added a brand new beer to their existing range, a smoke lager aptly named O\u2019le Smokey by Deetlefs daughter, Elmi. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is something unique and we absolutely love the result, as well do our local supporters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe used a Beech Smoked Malt that brings a subtle flavour of BBQ or even bacon. The smokey flavour is not too much or overpowering, but balances nicely with the other malt. Its available on tap at Brewhaha Restaurant. <\/p>\n
