UNLICENSED service delivery vehicles have Jeffreys Bay residents\u2019 axles spinning. They are fearing for the safety of fellow-motorists.<\/p>\n
They now demand Kouga Municipality to put the brakes on these \u2018unsafe\u2019 vehicles, reducing the number of unlicensed \u2013 and unroadworthy \u2013 vehicles on the road.<\/p>\n
Freddie van Rooyen, from the non-profit community organisation Masikhathalelaneni, says, \u201cThe municipality allows several service delivery vehicles on public roads without licence disks \u2013 including trucks delivering a critical daily service such as the emptying of sewer tanks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe majority of these vehicles\u2019 licence discs expired in October 2018 and December 2018.<\/p>\n
\u201cThus, the particular service delivery vehicles have not undergone a roadworthy test since 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fuelling the concern, Van Rooyen informed the municipality about the expired licence discs in July this year \u2013 when he first became aware of the situation \u2013 but it was only in October that they approached the service provider to obtain temporary licence discs for some of the vehicles \u2013 more than a year after the expiry date.<\/p>\n
According to Van Rooyen, some of the drivers do not have the required operators\u2019 cards either<\/p>\n
\u201cThe municipality is paying thousands of Rand to the specific service provider to use unlicensed vehicles. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey are placing the safety of the driver and his co-drivers, as well as other motorists at risk,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
