YOUNG people from Humansdorp are gearing up to take back the streets from criminals and gangsters.<\/p>\n
The first Humansdorp Street Sport Festival is set to take place at the Kruisfontein Centre on December 27 and 28.<\/p>\n
Initiated by Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks, the purpose of the festival is to take a stand against social challenges facing young people today, including, drug and substance abuse, violent crimes and gangsterism.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the factors that contri-bute to these challenges is the lack of extra mural activities available to young people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudies and experience have shown that sport is an effective way of keeping young people away from illegal and destructive activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is why we have embarked on this initiative, with the aim of rolling it out to other areas as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hendricks invited businesses and community organisations to take hands with the municipality for the hosting of the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cActivities will include five-a-side soccer, touch rugby, mini cricket and netball. Entry will be open to teams from across Humansdorp,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said stakeholders could become involved by sponsoring prizes, refreshments or gifts for participants.<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately, we would like to see the concept taking off across the Kouga region to such an extent that we will be able to create a \u2018street league\u2019 for young people who are not active in formal sport but would like to socialise with their peers in a healthy environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will also be an opportunity for young people to explore their talents and interests in a fun way,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
The Humansdorp Street Sport Festival will take place from 09:00 to 17:00 on December 27 and 28.<\/p>\n
