SUN . . . sea . . . sand . . . and adrenaline-packed action \u2013 it is beach touchies time.<\/p>\n
The annual fast-paced JBay Touchies tournament \u2013 one of the biggest highlights on the local sports calendar \u2013 will take to the sand at Dolphin Beach (main beach) in Jeffreys Bay on Thursday, December 26. <\/p>\n
The tournament, now in its second year and sponsored by USN, will see 32 teams of eight players each take to the field. All battling it out to be crowned the ultimate winners of the beach.<\/p>\n
According to event organiser, Christo Botha from 1Touch, the game is suitable for women and men to play as a team. <\/p>\n
Age or experience does not matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether you are eight years old or 60, anyone can join in the action \u2013 as long as you can run,\u201d says Botha who has been playing touchies since 1991. <\/p>\n
Putting his skills to the ultimate test, Botha led the Bulldogs Touchies team from 2001 to 2008 \u2013 claiming victory at the Rapport JBay Touchies tournament for seven consecutive years. \u201cI eat, sleep and live touch rugby,\u201d says Botha who has been playing a game every Sunday for the past 28 years.<\/p>\n
But how does the game work? <\/p>\n
According to Botha the game will follow a knock-out format. \u201cProfessional players and beginners are welcome,\u201d he says<\/p>\n
The winning team will walk away with R2 000 in prize money, while loads of prizes \u2013 including prizes from Cell C and USN, will also be up for grabs.<\/p>\n
The entry fee is R100 per team. Registration is from 07:00, while the tournament will kick off at 09:00.<\/p>\n
