\n C<\/span>UT . . . backstitch . . . edgestitch . . . tie . . . and again – all to protect the livelihood of Kouga residents.<\/p>\n

A number of St Francis Bay residents are tirelessly working together, stitch-by-stitch, to help provide much-needed handmade masks to frontline workers fighting the Covid-19 virus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Also on the list are the sickly, the elderly, children and all residents in need. <\/p>\n

Avid seamstress, Nicole Kellett, first began making the colourful and washable masks after the first positive Covid-19 case was reported in South Africa on March 5, this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband and I were glued to World News when all the trouble started in China, Italy, Spain and America,\u201d says Kellett. \u201cI was shocked at the lack of personal protective equipment in each country \u2013 especially the desperate pleas for masks. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the first suspected case of Covid-19 tested positive in South Africa, I got scared. If those big countries do not have enough masks, there is no way that we will even come close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Determined to help make a difference \u2013 no matter how small \u2013 Kellett researched handmade masks online and soon afterwards started to experiment with different patterns. <\/p>\n

She says, \u201cI contacted the local caregivers and clinics to see if they needed masks. And they all did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not resting on her laurels, Kellett roped in the help of her sewing riends.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom there, the word just spread,\u201d she laughs. \u201cWe are now 23 ladies sewing frantically \u2013 all local girls who sew and want to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of us have actually never met \u2013 everyone sews from home, using a pattern that they are comfortable with.\u201d<\/p>\n

To date, the enthusiastic sewers have made over 700 protective masks \u2013 ranging in pattern, material, colour and size.<\/p>\n

According to Kellett, they have all used what fabric they had in their cupboards, including cut up sheets and duvet covers. \u201cWhen we started running short, I put a message on the St Francis Facebook Page and was inundated with offers of fabric and linen. This community is absolutely amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Completed masks are given to Calibre, who take them to the Sea Vista Clinic where they are distributed among the elderly, the sickly and the children \u2013 and then to anyone else.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalibre have been extremely helpful as we are not allowed to drive around during lockdown. They collect and deliver for us,\u201d says Kellett.<\/p>\n

Masks have also been supplied to local caregivers and to the Kruisfontein Clinic in Humansdorp.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes me feel like we have a purpose and in a time where you don\u2019t have a lot of control of the situation, doing what you can do is helpful,\u201d says Kellett.<\/p>\n
