Beneath a string of huge lamps, set to attract the squid, a dozen or so fishermen are hard at work to land their catch.<\/p>\n<p>They jerk hand lines at the end of which are lures with small crowns of barbless hooks, in a process known as jigging. As they haul the catch aboard, there is often a need for a very different type of jig: a deft move left or right to avoid a blast of ink that the squid can unleash when caught.<\/p>\n<p>In the wheelhouse is Arthur Paulse. A veteran skipper of 37 years, it is his job to look after the boat and crew, and to find the squid. Judging by the amount that is being landed tonight, he is pretty good at it.<\/p>\n<p>Paulse comes from a family of fishers and first picked up a rod and line when he was still at school.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, he has dabbled with hake and other fish, but these days he only catches a single species: the Cape Hope squid (<em>Loligo reynaudii<\/em>), known in these parts as chokka, calamari or white gold. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFishing is in my blood,\u201d he says. \u201cSome days it can be hard to find the squid and it gets stressful, but when you succeed, all that goes away. The lines are working, the catch is being hauled aboard, everyone is happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Paulse, squid has been nothing short of life-changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very grateful for the chokka: it feeds my family and gives me a good life,\u201d he says. \u201cIt paid for my daughter\u2019s schooling. She is an accountant now and I couldn\u2019t be any prouder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot imagine doing anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With any luck, he shouldn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the fishery is widely regarded as well-managed. Judging by the amount that is being landed tonight, he is pretty good at it. <\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>White gold rush<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Until the early 1980s, St Francis was a sleepy beach town best known as the site of the \u201cten-million-to-one\u201d waves in cult 1960s surf movie <em>The Endless Summer<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>When Greg Christy\u2019s family of fishers moved to the area back then, the reception they received was a little frosty. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say the community was very welcoming at first,\u201d he says. \u201cThey thought of us as dirty fishermen, because the ink from the squid would squirt us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the Christy family was far more interested in line fishing, and only caught squid to use as bait. Until one day, a chance encounter with a seafood exporter changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [the exporter] recognised it as the same type of squid they caught in the Med, realised it could be valuable and asked us to put a container together,\u201d Christy says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found a local dairy with a freezing facility and sent our first container to Italy. With that the market for squid exploded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The white gold rush had begun.<\/p>\n<p>In the four decades since, squid has grown from an inky afterthought to a global seafood superstar worth an estimated \u20ac20-25 million a year.<\/p>\n<p>Its texture and taste are particularly sought-after in Southern Europe, where most of the catch ends up. It\u2019s the sector\u2019s third largest employer in South Africa, and directly supports 2 500 people in St Francis alone \u2013 half of the permanent population.<\/p>\n<p>Squid has become, as harbour master Johan Barnard puts it, \u201cthe heart of St Francis\u201d.<\/p>\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_dc0d7594\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/10251\/6c2c0c95a57f485981c8d5e38d10e2f2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/a669d07753bb43f887e28f363bf2d301.jpg\" title=\"When Greg Christy\u2019s family of fishers moved to the area back then, the reception they received was a little frosty. \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">When Greg Christy\u2019s family of fishers moved to the area back then, the reception they received was a little frosty. <\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Catching squid<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>While the humble squid has completely transformed almost all aspects of life in St Francis over the last forty years, one thing stayed the same: the way the fishers catch it.<\/p>\n<p>Around the world, most squid are caught in trawl nets or with automatic squid jigging machines. But here in St Francis, things are still done the old way, by hand.<\/p>\n<p>It is a traditional method with a huge number of benefits. Because the squid are taken one-at-a-time with specialised equipment, there is very little accidental capture of other species or undersized squid, and where this does happen, they can easily be released back into the sea unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>There is almost no impact on habitats, because the fishing takes place in the water column, far above the seabed. And it is far more labour intensive than newer methods, making the fishery a crucial source of local employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFishing by hand is the way to go,\u201d Paulse says.<\/p>\n<p>Christy agrees, highlighting the decision to \u201cnot industrialise the fishery with nets or machines\u201d as key to the fishery\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>But the right gear is only part of the sustainability story.<\/p>\n<p>Squid live fast and die young, rarely reaching their second birthday. If Paulse and the other fishers catch them during their breeding season, the squid might not have the chance to reproduce, impacting on catches in future years.<\/p>\n<p>To guard against this possibility and promote better management, the fishery operates two closed seasons and manages total effort \u2013 limiting both the number of people allowed to fish and the number of days at sea. <\/p>\n<p>It is a delicate balance. The closed seasons mean that no fishing takes place for a third of each year. This means no work for the fishermen, and \u201cmillions of Rands in boats sitting idle,\u201d as Christy puts it. <\/p>\n<p>But for Paulse and the other fishers, it is a necessary sacrifice. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to look after the squid so that it can sustain itself. If the squid live, we live. And if there are decent amounts of squid, we make a decent living. It works both ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, smarter fishing practices, agile management and a unique, traditional gear have combined to create a well-managed fishery. <\/p>\n<p>But Christy, Paulse and the rest of the sector aren\u2019t stopping there. They know that sustainability isn\u2019t a fixed destination, but a journey of continual adaptation. <\/p>\n<p>There will always be new challenges to overcome to ensure that the health of squid populations, and the livelihoods of those who depend upon it are secured long into the future.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, they\u2019ve joined forces with Fish For Good South Africa to optimise the sustainability they are working so hard to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Initiated by the Marine Stewardship Council, the international sustainable seafood ecolabel and certification programme, and supported by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery, the four-year initiative is working to further improve fishing practices, management and governance so that the industry may continue to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>The fishery has recently undergone a pre-assessment to measure how it performs against the rigorous sustainability requirements of the MSC Fisheries Standard, and developed an action plan in collaboration
