{"id":52363,"date":"2020-06-25T06:03:21","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T04:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/clearing-a-career-path-for-women-20200624-2\/"},"modified":"2020-06-25T06:03:21","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T04:03:21","slug":"clearing-a-career-path-for-women-20200624-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/clearing-a-career-path-for-women-20200624-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Clearing a career path for women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <span>A<\/span><br \/>\n <span> former litter-picker is clearing a new career path for women at Kouga Municipality.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>Nokufika Mvundla (46) has become the first woman to be appointed as a plant operator at the municipality.<\/p>\n<p>She passed her test to operate a tractor loader backhoe, commonly known as a TLB, in May and will now be handling one of these yellow giants for the municipality\u2019s Waste and Environmental Management section.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNokufika has been on the front line of the Keep Kouga Clean campaign since the very beginning,\u201d Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been working as a litter-picker these past ten years and has now exchanged her litter-picking tongs for a TLB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish to congratulate her on obtaining her certificate of competence and trust that we will see her moving on to even bigger machines in the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A widowed mother of two teenage sons, Mvundla said she was looking forward to the new challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe support from my co-workers has been incredible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people still see operating heavy machinery as a man\u2019s job, but technology has advanced to such an extent that skill, rather than strength, is required when handling them. This opens up tremendous opportunities for women,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said Mvundla would remain on the frontline of the Keep Kouga Campaign as one of two TLB drivers tasked with clearing illegal dumping sites in Jeffreys Bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was one of four staff that were sent for training so that there would be at least two TLB drivers, focused on waste management, at all our main units.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said illegal dumping was a challenge across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only is it unsightly, but it is also a health risk to communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe municipality cannot win the war alone. Residents also need to do their part by reducing the amount of waste they generate and by adopting a zero-tolerance stance towards littering or dumping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said most households in the region had received wheelie bins over the past 13 months and that the roll-out to all areas would be concluded in the new financial year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also skip bins at many of the dumping
