AS the tourism industry slowly but surely re-opens, Kouga Municipality has set the wheels in motion to welcome visitors back to its swimming beaches this coming festive season.<\/p>\n
A new 4×4 bakkie and a quad bike have been purchased for the municipality\u2019s lifeguards.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic will be over on time for us to welcome residents and visitors back to the swimming beaches this summer,\u201d Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said. \u201cThe Tourism industry has taken a severe knock because of the lockdown restrictions. A good festive season will give our region an opportunity to start recovering from the immense economic damage the lockdown has caused.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said it was the first time the municipal lifeguards would have a fleet of their own.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lifeguards work over a wide area, covering the coast from Oyster Bay to the Gamtoos Mouth.<\/p>\n
\u201cTransporting them to their designated areas or reaching emergencies off the beaten track have in the past proved challenging as they did not have their own fleet. The new bakkie will help to address this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quad bike will also help to improve their response time to emergencies that happen away from the main swimming beaches, where they are usually stationed.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said a new 4×4 bakkie had also been procured for the Disaster Management section.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis section\u2019s old bakkie is still in working order and will also be used to support lifeguard services when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the safety of Kouga\u2019s beaches was a big drawing card for tourists and that the municipality would continue its efforts to strengthen its lifeguard section year on year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
