EEUOUE plaashuisies is van die grootpad net wit blokkies in die berge se groen, maar van naderby omvou die nostalgie jou. <\/p>\n

Hier het toentertyd landtemmers (die De Vos-familie) gewoon, geboer en geleef. Net hul grafte is oor.<\/p>\n

Eienaar Andr\u00e9 Hamman ontvang ons hartlik op Nguniland, skaars 3km uit Kareedouw waar hy en sy seun, Johan, op 950ha tot diep in die Suuranysberg boer. Hamman se sprankelvrou, Maritha, \u2019n oud-onderwyseres, lyk meer as \u2019n dekade jonger as wat sy s\u00ea. Daar is beslis iets in die plaaswater wat jeugdigheid behou.<\/p>\n

Na \u2019n deeglike kuier op die plaasstoep, ry Hamman met sy bakkie vooruit om ons die pad te wys tot by die verste huisie. Ons trek sak en pak in. Dit l\u00ea byna bo teen die voorberg. Langsaan staan \u2019n wawiel teen die buurstoep en lei trappe op na \u2018n solderkamer. Tyd versteen.<\/p>\n

Dit juig behoorlik: \u201cOp berge en in in dale, en oral is God . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 lag: \u201cEk het al in baie van di\u00e9 huise gebly.\u201d Maar die holte vir sy voet is in die plaasopstal met die wye stoep, lang tafel en stoele waar mens lank kan kuier. Die stilte is salig.<\/p>\n

Later, verder af loop ek op die smal, geroeste spoor van die ou Apple Express; die stoomtreintjie wat van Port Elizabeth tot die Loerie-stasie geloop het. Heimwe\u00eb. Op di\u00e9 plek verloor ek my hart. Net onder loop die Kromrivier glansend in die laaste son van die dag. Die water kruip uit die kloof bo van die berg af. Oorkant troon die Drie Krone bo die grootpad uit.<\/p>\n

Besoekers<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Vroeg op na die klipslaap-nag, val iets op die dak. Met die uitstorm vlug die besoeker, maar ons merk sy meelopers buite die kombuisvenster. \u2019n Hengse trop bobbejane. Een sit kordaat op die draadheining en staar ons aan.<\/p>\n

Hulle draf langs die huis verby, af teen die berg en kotteljons net \u2019n ent weg. Drie jaag mekaar op \u2019n onderste huisie se dak. Later kom die groot indoena agter die trop aangestap, o\u00ebnskynlik oppad water toe.<\/p>\n

\u201cNee\u201d, s\u00ea Andr\u00e9, \u201chulle wil die skape se kos steel. Ons moet hulle van die opstal af verwilder. Maar hierbo loop hulle los.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harde werk<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Terwyl my mense met Maritha stoepkuier, vertel Andr\u00e9 die plaasstorie.<\/p>\n

Na jare in die besige korporatiewe w\u00eareld \u201cwaar mens vir \u2019n rekenaar werk in eposland\u201d, het die Hammans van Pretoria op Nature\u2019s Valley gaan aftree. Hy het die tuin binne enkele maande reggeruk, maar . . . toe wat?<\/p>\n

Met \u2019n kuier in die Kouga, sien hy \u2019n plaas te koop. Hamman kom kyk \u2013 opgewonde oor die berge, rivier, die wydheid, maar sy vrou sien die ou karwrakke en stukkende huise, terg hy. Dit sou \u2019n naweekplek wees om te ontspan.<\/p>\n

Toe hulle die plaas in 2006 koop, was die plek \u201coortrek van die wattelbome, die huise was murasies, die motorwrakke het oral gestaan \u2013 en dis al wat Maritha gesien het.\u201d <\/p>\n

Drie dae na die plaas op sy naam is, het \u2019n vloed hulle \u201cverwelkom\u201d. \u201cEk kon nie oor die brug kom nie, alles is weggespoel \u00e9n ons was bietjie verdwaas. Teen ander boere se verwagting, het die Staat ges\u00ea ons moet eis en 70% daarvan is uitbetaal. Daarmee kon ons die lande rehabiliteer en bewerkbaar maak.\u201d <\/p>\n

Toe het die opruiming begin. Die Hammans se een tweelingseun, Johan, het saamgewerk. <\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9: \u201cDie kontrakteur het 12 ure per dag geswoeg, en net werk gestaak dat die masjiene gediens kon word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teen 2008 kon die plaaswerk begin \u2013 draadspan en een vir een huisie regmaak. Die volgende jaar kon hulle begin boer en het die eerste Nguni\u2019s aangeland. Later het \u2019n paar skape bygekom. Nguniland het die minste uitheemse bome in die kontrei na grootskaalse uitroei van die indringers, soos die wattelbome waarvan een tot 50 liter water \u2018n dag gebruik. Uiteraard, is die karwrakke en vragte ander rommel na die groot vloed weggery.<\/p>\n

Die huisies is teen 2011 voltooi en gaste het Nguniland voluit begin besoek. Nou het besoekers die voorreg om onder die geelhoutplafonne te oornag. Outentiek gerestoureer, opgeknap of verbou en keurig ingerig \u2013 die onderskeie huise huisves twee tot ses mense, is ten volle toegerus, beskik oor braaigeriewe, bied onderdakparkering . . . en \u2019n uitsig uit die hemel.<\/p>\n

Diere sluit in bosbokke, Kaapse grysbokkies, blouduikers, klipspringers, bosvarke, ystervarke, skilpaaie, ratels en natuurlik die bobbejane. Let op na fynbos, kassierbome, wildeperske, witels en rooiels in die klofies. Hier is stap-, draf- bergfietspaaie, vo\u00eblkyk, plantidentifikasie, rivierswem en rotsklim.<\/p>\n

Nguni-stoet<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 wys my \u2019n foto van \u2018n Nguni-koei met haar dubbelganger-kalfie. Later stap ek langs die draadheining af waar die gevlekte beeste wei. <\/p>\n

Die stamboek-diere kom uit die keur van ouer Amersfoort-koeie wat in 2009 op Nguniland vir te\u00ebldoeleindes gevestig is. Hier is alles suiwer: die lug, die water en die diere.<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 Hamman van Nguniland som Kareedouw uitstekend op en vertel dat dit m\u00e9\u00e9r as \u2018n wonderlike gebied is.<\/p>\n

Hy besit die plaas sedert 2006, maar s\u00ea: \u201cEk is \u2019n inkommer hier. Hier is baie ou plase, ou boere-families en ou inwoners van die gebied. Die, wat uit Langkloof kom, en weggaan, kom weer terug.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamman: \u201cAs ek vra: hoekom is jy terug? s\u00ea hulle altyd: weet jy, my mense is hier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vir hom is Kareedouw nie net nog \u2019n kleindorpie nie. As mens deur ander plekkies ry, lyk en voel dit ellendig. \u201cMaar di\u00e9 dorp en die gemeenskap rondom is almal deel van Kareedouw. En dit is \u2018n lewende ding. Die mense is inmekaar geweef, en hulle harte is groot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dit vat jou \u2019n ruk om te weet wat hier aangaan as jy nuut is. Jy leer nog mense ken, maar almal weet van j\u00f3\u00fa, meen Hamman. <\/p>\n

\u201cEk is dopgehou oor wat ek hier aanvang, want vir seker dertig jaar het eienaars nie op die plaas gebly nie, en dinge het verwaarloos geraak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kareedouw as \u2019n dorpie \u2013 hier is nie huise wat leegstaan nie, al is daar mense wat stramtrek. Werk is skaars, maar die mense is die hart van die plek.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
