A JEFFREYS Bay road was one of the big winners at the 9th annual Eco-Logic Awards, held on Monday, September 21. <\/p>\n
Woltemade Street, popularly referred to as the \u201cplastic road\u201d, took gold in the Innovation category and silver in the Eco-build category at the prestigious awards, which recognise products, services and people who are taking effective action to protect and preserve our environment.<\/p>\n
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said the municipality was proud to have been partners in building Africa\u2019s first eco-friendly road, incorporating waste plastic. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe strongly believe that innovation is the key to keeping Kouga green and growing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe environment and economic growth go hand in hand, with the need for sustainable development opening up incredible opportunities for entrepreneurs, inventors and investors.\u201d <\/p>\n
The event included an address from the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy, highlighting the economic and financial impact COVID-19 has had on South Africa\u2019s conservation and tourism-based industries. <\/p>\n
She emphasised the need to focus on a nature-positive future as part of South Africa\u2019s overall economic recovery, calling for investment in green and sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n
The awards ceremony was livestreamed, with guests plugging in from as far as London, Paris, New York, Australia and New Zealand, said David Parry-Davies, director of Enviropaedia and the Eco-Logic Awards.<\/p>\n
The awards for Kouga\u2019s eco-friendly road were accepted by East Cape MPL, Vicky Knoetze, on behalf of the DA Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n
Knoetze, who initiated the project, said she believed the recognition would make \u201ca significant difference in transforming this pilot project into the generally accepted way of building roads in South Africa\u201d. <\/p>\n
