{"id":51939,"date":"2020-09-24T06:05:03","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T04:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/discover-the-new-trans-gamtoos-hike-20200923-2\/"},"modified":"2020-09-24T06:05:03","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T04:05:03","slug":"discover-the-new-trans-gamtoos-hike-20200923-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/discover-the-new-trans-gamtoos-hike-20200923-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover the new Trans Gamtoos hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SLACKPACKING is more than the new buzz; it is the new craze \u2013 less stress on your back and knees, while hiking and exploring.<\/p>\n<p>The Trans Gamtoos hike is the newest edition to this craze, offering hikers slackpacking on dirt roads through the marvellous Gamtoos Valley.<\/p>\n<p>It is a four-day (three-day hike) breakaway, which is perfect for a weekend and will hit all the highlights of this beautiful valley. <\/p>\n<p>The hike includes the Kouga Dam and the historical Phillip\u2019s tunnel and window.<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Day 1:<\/b> Arrive in the afternoon at Padlangs, 7km outside Patensie, where you can park and leave your vehicle. From there you will be transported to the next day\u2019s starting point in Cambria (one of the gateways to the spectacular Baviaanskloof).<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Day 2:<\/b> First day of hiking. Start at your own time and at your own pace after an early breakfast, through the Grootrivierpoort, entering the Gamtoos Valley and its agricultural offerings. Here you will cross the Gamtoos River and hike right up to the Kouga Dam, where a camp will be set for the night (\u00b1 25km).<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Day 3:<\/b> Again, at your own time and pace, you will follow the route through one of the valley\u2019s hidden gems, the Dro\u00ebkloof. Hikers will flex their muscles uphill a bit, and this will bring them to a high point for an almost bird\u2019s eye view of the Gamtoos Valley, before descending again down into the Dro\u00ebkloof and to the camp site (\u00b1 23km).<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Day 4:<\/b> From the Dro\u00ebkloof camp hikers depart on the last shift, an easy hike to the historical site that includes Phillip\u2019s tunnel. Hikers with extra energy should do the short, but steep climb to the famous \u201cwindow\u201d for one last view of the Gamtoos. <\/p>\n<p>Transport back to vehicles at Padlangs (\u00b1 17km).<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Need to know<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>This is not a guided hike; each hiker will receive a \u201cfool\u2019s guide\u201d with proper information to get to the next camp. This guide will provide information on the day\u2019s route on the gravel roads.<\/p>\n<p>There will be cell phone reception most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>This is a moderate to difficult hike due to the distances. The campsites are bush camps, which means there is no electricity.<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Bring along<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>The hike includes the transport to and from your vehicle, as well as transport of gear (tent and luggage). Breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as tea and coffee at the camp are included.<\/p>\n<p>Bring along: tent, sleeping gear, camp chair, normal hiking accessories, own drinks and
