Celebrated chef and
\nbusiness woman, Liziwe Matloha, has recently been appointed as national brand
\nambassador for First Choice, one of South Africa\u2019s leading milk and dairy
\nbrands. <\/p>\n

Owner of the home-based restaurant Dinner at Matloha\u2019s in Boksburg, she
\nturned her passion for cooking into a full time career, offering classes and
\nprivate chef services.<\/p>\n

Born, bred and raised
\nin Boskop, a rural part of Potchefstroom, cooking has always been part of her
\nlife. Says Matloha: \u201cI started cooking at a very young age, around 13. I\u2019m from
\na big family. On Sundays after church we would usually gather at home for this
\nbig Sunday lunch. This was most exciting for me. My dad provided for us as hard
\nit was. He worked as a farmer and we all depended on him. With the little
\nincome he received, he made sure to send each and everyone of us to school. It
\nwas up to us to work hard to achieve our goals and dreams, but he gave us that
\nopportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matloha always enjoyed
\nfood and cooking, but the thought that she could make a career out of it never
\ncrossed her mind. Before joining the culinary world full-time, she worked in
\nthe marketing and advertising field. She catered as a side hustle for about five
\nyears before deciding to leave her day job and follow her dream. <\/p>\n

\u201cI graduated
\nat Capsicum Culinary Studios, one of the leading culinary institutions in South
\nAfrica with a Diploma in Food Preparation and Cooking. Thereafter, I continued
\nmy training at hotels, restaurants and catering companies,\u201d Matloha adds.<\/p>\n

Dinner at Matloha\u2019s
\nwas formed in 2014. She explains: \u201cI\u2019d go to college during the week and do
\ncatering on the weekends. On some days during the week I\u2019d bake after class and
\nsell cookies, which were and still are very popular. Once I graduated from
\nCapsicum, I focused on the brand intensively. The goal was to offer cooking
\nclasses, host pop up restaurants and I did just that. I do share my recipes and
\ngive cooking tips online, but the most exciting part about cooking and food is
\nthe hands on experience which people love. Reading a recipe is not the same as
\nactually being guided through the process and getting all the tips and tricks
\non how to at the same time. I\u2019m passionate about cooking and food. Facilitating
\nthe classes gives me this amazing feeling that families will experience meals
\nprepared by someone who\u2019s been influenced by my way of cooking, which are
\nalways easy to prepare but great tasting and budget friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matloha loves sharing
\nthe little knowledge, information and skills she has. \u201cIt gives me amazing
\nsatisfaction. The response and feedback I receive from my students make me feel
\nwhole and blessed. It\u2019s truly a great feeling. The cooking classes are hands
\non, laid back, easy and fun. Imagine knowing various ways of cooking a dish
\nthat\u2019s both inspiring and exciting!\u201d<\/p>\n

She continues that
\nbecoming a First Choice Ambassador has been a life-changing experience. \u201cI’m
\nworking with a team of professionals that\u2019s always eager to guide me. They allow
\nme to be who I am, as a chef and a creative, and my opinion matters. It’s
\nwonderful that I can come up with ideas and First Choice will support me, guide
\nme through the process and give me the platform to share it with my fellow
\nSouth Africans.\u201d<\/p>\n

As an ambassador,
\nMatloha develops recipes, lives and represents the brand: \u201cI absolutely love
\nFirst Choice products and always share this with everyone. I want to create
\neven more awareness of the brand and provide a face to face experience for
\nconsumers. I sample the products and give demos on how to use it. I also
\nencourage consumers on my social media pages to try First Choice. Their
\nproducts offer excellent quality and value for money, plus their range is very
\nimpressive. My family loves the variety on offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matloha believes that
\nshe has achieved \u201cmany of the things that I always thought were not meant for a
\nfarm girl like me. I believe that my work speaks volumes of what I\u2019m capable of
\nachieving. I\u2019m enormously grateful for every achievement\u201d.<\/p>\n

As for many other
\nsmall businesses, lockdown has been tough. \u201cDue to the fact that we couldn\u2019t do
\nanything, the business suffered. I buy my groceries in bulk for the classes, so
\nthat was a challenge. I was stuck with stock that had no guarantee of being
\nused any time soon and I had to give everything away to charitable homes. With
\nus slowly getting back to work, I\u2019ll have to raise funds to stock up on
\neverything from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her aim is to bag as
\nmany projects as possible next year to make up for lost income due to the
\nCovid-19 pandemic and lockdown. \u201cBut my longtime goals still stand. My first
\ncookbook will be released early next year, so I’m working towards promoting it
\nas much as I can. It\u2019s very exciting and will be the greatest achievement of my
\ncareer. I\u2019d also like to launch my own spice range that I\u2019d love to see on
\nshelves. 2020 was the year to work on this but it\u2019s never too late. I\u2019m excited
\nabout the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being a wife and
\nmother of three makes working uncertain hours a real struggle. \u201cI schedule work
\na few days during the week in order for me to be home for dinner with my
\nfamily. Weekends I spend with my family and I don\u2019t compromise on that. Work
\nwill always be there on Monday, but the time that is lost with my family can
\nnever be recovered. Luckily my family is very supportive of me as a person and
\nwhat I do. They are always there for me,\u201d she concludes.<\/p>\n
