THERE has been a dramatic drop in active COVID-19 cases in the Kouga region this past week.<\/p>\n
According to the latest report from the Department of Health, the number of active cases dropped from 210 on January 13 to 108 on January 17. The department has attributed the decrease to the high number of recoveries that were recorded last week. <\/p>\n
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, welcomed the news but cautioned residents, visitors and the business sector to remain on guard. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe decrease in active cases comes as a great relief, but we saw last year how quickly a resurgence could occur,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is, therefore, important that each one of us continues to adhere to the COVID-19 safety precautions. <\/p>\n
\u201cPlease avoid crowded places, wear a face mask when in public, maintain social distancing and practise proper hand hygiene.\u201d<\/p>\n
The breakdown of active cases per town was as follows on January 17: Jeffreys Bay 49, Humansdorp 27, St Francis 20, Patensie 9, Hankey 2, Loerie 1 and Oyster Bay 0.<\/p>\n
The cumulative total stood at 5 239, including 5 034 recoveries and 97 deaths. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat means the local recovery rate has increased to 96%, which is encouraging,\u201d Hendricks said. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur target is to have zero infections in our region. <\/p>\n
\u201cLet us continue doing all we can to curb the spread of the coronavirus and keep Kouga safe,\u201d Hendricks added.<\/p>\n
