A new pound had been established at a farm in Thornhill to assist with the management of stray animals in the Kouga region.<\/p>\n
The privately-owned pound, located at 441 Nocton in Thornhill, offers separate enclosures for different animals including cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. <\/p>\n
All camps have permanent water points and are securely fenced off.<\/p>\n
According to community services portfolio councillor, Daniel Benson, the pound has replaced the pound in Loerie, which had closed only a few weeks after it opened earlier this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is hoped that the pound will go a long way towards reducing road accidents that are a result of stray animals,\u201d said Benson.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe pound will also greatly contribute to the fight against stock theft, as stray animals will now have a secure place to be taken to,\u201d Benson added.<\/p>\n
He said the pound made use of a service provider to pick up stray animals.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce a stray animal is reported to the municipality\u2019s call centre, our law enforcement officers make contact with the pound to arrange for the animals to be collected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Benson encouraged all livestock owners to ensure their animals do not wander around unattended and that they are properly branded. \u201cUltimately, it is the responsibility of livestock owners to keep their animals from damaging other people\u2019s property and roaming around in the road, where they can cause serious accidents,\u201d Benson said.<\/p>\n
Stray animals can be reported to the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200. Follow the voice prompts and choose option five.<\/p>\n
