<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\u201cThree boreholes \u2013 delivering a combined yield of 777kl of water per day \u2013 were connected to the existing water supply at the Sea Vista reservoir,\u201d said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo more viable boreholes are set to be connected within the next week or two.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce connected, the combined yield of the five boreholes will be 1 200kl per day \u2013 only half of the current average water consumption of between 2 100kl to 2 600kl per day. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis can increase to over 7 000kl per day over the peak season in December when the area has an influx in visitors.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is therefore imperative that all residents and businesses in the area reduce their above average daily water consumption by at least 50% before December <\/p>\n
to delay Day Zero \u2013 the day when they will run out of water \u2013 which is predicted for the end of October this year, should no significant rain fall in the catchment area very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said council had, furthermore, adjusted the municipality\u2019s capital budget to make provision for drought mitigation projects in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome R900 000 has been made available for groundwater investigation for additional boreholes in St Francis Bay,\u201d said Hendricks. \u201cCouncil has also applied to national departments for R101 million in drought funding to investigate desalination and to install prepaid meters throughout Kouga.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of the municipality\u2019s efforts to manage water usage, stringent measures have been put in place to ensure that the restricted allocation of water \u2013 50l<\/em> per person per day \u2013 is adhered to. The municipality is also working with law enforcement to enforce compliance.<\/p>\nResidents are reminded that the current water restrictions prohibit the connection of a hose pipe or an irrigation system to taps supplying water from the municipal system. <\/p>\n
Pools may not be filled or topped up, and the washing of paved areas, roofs and walls with municipal water is also not allowed.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery one of us has a role to play in preventing Kouga\u2019s taps from running dry \u2013 we must do all we can to save water,\u201d said Hendricks. \u201cWe can only save water while there is still water to be saved.\u201d<\/p>\n
