Photo:SUPPLIED<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>THE Kouga Municipality officially launched the tarring of a gravel road, Koe-rat Street, in Humansdorp on Friday, September 17 \u2013 a first in more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the 1km road, estimated to be completed by the end of the month, is set at close to R2 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am absolutely proud of this historic moment \u2013 the first gravel road to be tarred in the region in over 20 years,\u201d said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it is only the first of many gravel roads to be tarred across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said roads provide access to livelihoods and support economic development. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoads represent progress. They provide a visible buffer against economic decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several local SMMEs will, furthermore, benefit during the construction phase.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hendricks, the tarring of the road \u2013 previously known as Rooilyn Street \u2013 is dedicated to the first families who lived there: the Marais, Scheepers, Matodlana, Booysens and Claassens families.<\/p>\n<p>One of the oldest residents in the street, Meisie Laetitia Sheila (68), who has been living in Koerat Street since birth, is elated that the road will be tarred. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am overjoyed that the road will be tarred after all these years \u2013 indeed a day for the history books,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Hendricks said, \u201cSome R10 million had been budgeted for the tarring of gravel roads in the current financial year \u2013 the entrance to the Golf Course in KwaNomzamo, and Mentoor Street in Kruisfontein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn additional R20 million will be spent on the tarring of gravel roads
