A total of 25 water tanks have been delivered to Hankey, to ease the water supply challenges due to the ongoing drought effects in the area.<\/p>\n

More tanks will be delivered before the end of the month.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kouga region is in the grip of a devastating drought \u2013 with the towns of Hankey and Patensie being hit the hardest, as they depend completely on the Kouga Dam for potable water,\u201d said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks.<\/p>\n

The level of the dam dropped to below 7% this week, with no significant rainfall predicted for the catchment area over the next few months. <\/p>\n

\u201cEven though residents from Patensie will still be able to extract water from the Wolwekloof Dam (balancing dam) and two viable boreholes, once the Kouga Dam has run dry, Hankey residents will only have access to borehole water that supplies 40% of the current daily water consumption,\u201d said Hendricks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe municipality has therefore erected six water points, consisting of four 5 000l water tanks each, in Hankey to ensure that residents have access to clean drinking water.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe water points, erected at a combined cost of more than R292 000, are in Old Hankey, Phillipsville, Old Stofwolk, Silvertown, Weston and Centerton.<\/p>\n

According to Hendricks, an additional R3.6 million will be budgeted for the continued upgrade of the Hankey sanitation system, while another R2.8 million is on the budget for boreholes in Hankey. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe remind residents that the current water restrictions prohibit the connection of a hose pipe or an irrigation system to taps supplying water from the municipal system,\u201d said Hendricks. <\/p>\n

\u201cPools may not be filled or topped up, and the washing of paved areas, roofs and walls with municipal water is also not allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of the municipality\u2019s ongoing drought awareness campaign, the Kouga Municipality has teamed up with Pabala Private Nature Reserve and Fountains Mall to give one lucky Kouga Express reader the chance of winning an amazing prize.<\/p>\n

The prize, which is valued at R2 050, includes accommodation for one night for two people sharing in one of the tents at the tented bush camp at Pabala Private Nature Reserve, as well as honey tasting for two at The Venue at Pabala Private Nature Reserve for four people. Also up for grabs are a R500 Fountains Mall voucher and a Kouga Municipality goodie bag. <\/p>\n
