{"id":49890,"date":"2021-11-25T11:11:06","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T09:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/all-prepaid-electricity-meters-to-be-upgraded-20211124-2\/"},"modified":"2021-11-25T11:11:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T09:11:06","slug":"all-prepaid-electricity-meters-to-be-upgraded-20211124-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/kougaexpress\/all-prepaid-electricity-meters-to-be-upgraded-20211124-2\/","title":{"rendered":"All prepaid electricity meters to be upgraded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kouga Municipality is set to upgrade all prepaid electricity meters\u2019 software across the region \u2013 changing the meter coding to ensure that all encryption key numbers are reset before the October 2024 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>They will also inspect the meters for correct functioning and any meter irregularities.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after the municipality awarded a one-time amnesty for residents whose electricity meters were faulty, not sealed or illegally connected (bypassed) earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the current prepaid meter software expires in 2024, any meter which has not been recoded will be unable to upload prepaid tokens, resulting in residents being without electricity supply,\u201d said newly elected Kouga infrastructure and engineering portfolio Councillor, Lorraine Maree.<\/p>\n<p>According to Maree, the project \u2013 which will see the inspection of close to 17 000 prepaid meters \u2013 will be conducted on a door-to-door basis by Kouga Municipality employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly approved, trained and competent technicians with proper identity cards will visit homes and businesses,\u201d said Maree. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess should only be granted to employees who display their identity cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe assure residents that COVID-19 regulations will be strictly adhered to \u2013 including sanitising before and after entering homes or business premises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kouga Municipality employees will visit residences and business during office hours on weekdays. Where it is not possible to grant them access during these hours, appointments can be made to conduct the meter upgrade after hours.<\/p>\n<p>Maree said this project would not only address meter
